They can be heard anywhere in the head or in one or both ears. These sounds are not related to any psychiatric condition, although it can be bothersome, tinnitus usually isn&#8217;t a sign of \u201csomething serious\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tinnitus can be heard as a:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hissing,&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ringing,&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> whistling,&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> roaring,&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> chirping,&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> clicking,&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> whooshing sound<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sound varies from person to person in terms of pitch .i.e. from a low frequency (roaring) to a high frequency (squeal) in others.&nbsp; In some cases, the sound may be present all the time, or it may come and go (intermittent). There are two types of tinnitus, objective or subjective tinnitus. Objective tinnitus is audible to both the person and an observer listening through a stethoscope or listening close to the ear. Subjective tinnitus can only be heard by the person and is more common.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Common causes<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people develop tinnitus for no obvious reason and it affects anyone from any background, however, some common causes include:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prolonged noise exposure to loud noise sources .e.g. heavy machinery\/equipment, firearms, loud music devices etc. Tinnitus caused by short-term exposure, such as attending a loud concert, usually goes away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Age-related hearing loss. Hearing usually worsens with age commonly starting from the ages of 60. Hearing loss can cause tinnitus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earwax blockage.&nbsp; When too much earwax accumulates it can cause a temporary hearing loss which can lead to tinnitus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ototoxic medications.certain medications e.g. injectable aminoglycosides for MDR-TB&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meniere&#8217;s disease and&nbsp; Acoustic neuroma \/vestibular schwannoma. These inner ear disorders are associated with tinnitus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Head or neck injuries. These can affect the inner ear, hearing nerves or brain function linked to hearing leading to tinnitus in only one ear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety &amp; stress are common enablers of tinnitus. People who suffer from anxiety, depression and stress commonly have ringing in their ears. Smoking enables tinnitus. Studies have found that cigarette smoke has toxic chemicals linked with chronic ear infections &amp; tinnitus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people that have tinnitus are ashamed to seek help or to discuss the condition with their loved ones, hoping that it will disappear. Unless it\u2019s caused by medications and you stop taking them, tinnitus may not disappear.
